Who's Who? - year 1 games art (Ryan Cudworth)

Who's Who?

Ken Sugimori

Ken Sugimori
Firstly, If you don't know who Ken Sugimori is, he is an Japanese artist that has been more famously know for his work within the franchise know as Pokémon, working as the artist that created and came up with all the designs for the 151 original Pokémon with the first generation of the games. He had started this line of work for the Pokémon franchise within around 1985, when he and his friend Satoshi Tajiri started to form their every own game company. And then within 1995 they had officially started to make Pokémon. And finally, Ken Sugimori had finished his time within the Pokémon franchise around gen 6 (X & Y) to gen 7 (sun & moon) games, were he stepped down as the art director, but had still helps with directing the creation of the regional Alola forms for the Pokémon for gen 7, (sun & moon).

Secondly, within his many years of working within the Pokémon franchise he has created thousands of artwork, and not all of them were for the main Pokémon games. he had worked on creation some of the artwork the the Pokémon movies and series that have been watched and believed by thousands of people all over the world, and also created some of the illustrations for the TGC Pokémon cards, that have had and still have plenty of people buying, collecting, battling and even trading with one another, and had also helped with the creation of many of the Pokémon franchises merchandise that have been bought by many of the franchises fans and have even filled many stores all over the world. Because of this mans work we have all this wonderful.
For most of the Ken Sugimori artwork, you can see very clear and distinct style within each one of them, that many people are clear and aware of, and I’ve tried to even replicate themselves when creating Pokémon. Type of style that he uses to create each of the Pokémon is to use a sort of watercolour style with very harsh lighting. Kind of paint splatters is around the Pokémon, That even though they are quite large and a bright lighting it Doesn’t bring down any of the designs for the Pokémon actually give it a very distinct and unique style to any of the other Pokémon artwork that we have seen in recent days. Even after many years of existence, the main and most original style for Pokémon is the Ken Sugimori art style which many creators look up to.
When looking into further details into Ken Sugimori’s art history, I had found that he had actually had an inspiration for his artwork, His inspiration was that a Japanese man called Akira Toriyama, Who was in fact a manga artist and character designer. It seems that this man was the main inspiration for all of Ken Sugimori’s early watercolour artwork. If you want to look closely between both of the creature designs, you can see that many of the Pokémon designs have been inspired off some of the creature and monster designs that Akira Toriyama had designed and created. This is a very interesting fact about Ken Sugimori‘s art style since it shows that even though he had drawn inspiration from another artist work he was able to make his own and not create a complete rip-off of that artists own work. And it also very interesting because even people today would look at Ken Sugimori’s work and not even realise that he had drawn inspiration from another artist which shows that using another artist work to help develop your own art is actually a very beneficial and widely accepted to the art community.

Thirdly, here I’ll be talking about some of Ken Sugimori’s peers within his working career at the Pokémon franchise, And see what other artist he may have worked alongside and helped when working.

With his long life of working at the Pokémon franchise, it is obvious that he has interacted with and even worked alongside many other artist who had also worked within the franchise. By looking into Who they are and what they did we can get a better understanding of the kind of people that he worked alongside.
I have been able to find three different people who had worked with in the same franchise as Ken Sugimori, I had picked them since I thought that general demeanour was very interesting towards me and that their role within the company company or also seemed very interesting to go up more deeper into and try and find any information about them.

First up, I’ll be talking about Nakoki Saito. He is a Japanese artist. Who is best known for walking the Pokémon franchise, working as a digital illustrator, who had created many pieces of work for the Pokémon TCG trading card game. Ever since the heartgold and soulsilva expansion path was released. He had also done some work For other areas within the Pokémon franchise, creating some art for the Pokémon games that were released. Some other facts about Nakoki Saito, Is that he had graduated from the art university of Tama, which when researching seems to be a Great and well admired University of arts. With it have basically been running for over 90 years, during which has been able to produce many of incredible artist of all different types and styles. It seems that the universe is a wide range of different classes within the many different variations of art Which doesn’t just include 2-D and 3-D artists but also includes the performing arts and such else. We can be sure that since Nakoki Saito Was able to graduate from such an esteem to place of art, we are Safe to assume that his skills were in art is none of her than exceptional or any less of impressive.
He has had previous employment at a different company for his skills within the arts. The company in which is the Konami Digital Entertainment Co. And then after having worked there, he has then later on gone to start his freelancing work. His work within the TCG Had had him done several different illustrations works for many different parts of the trading card franchise. That including Duel Masters, Monster Hunter, Juushinden: Ultra Beast Battlers, and Eternal Wheels. From looking at all that he has done with his career as an artist it is clear that he is a well-known and respected individual within the trading card game community. I’m just seeing how much he has done he is well-deserved of his recognition Within the pokémon franchise And trading card game world.

Secondly, For my next artist, I’ll be talking about is Histoshi Ariga. He is a very well-known Japanese Professional artist, Who has done a wide range of different work for many different companies and franchises. He has primary done work for manga illustrations and also done a lot of work for picture book, Where he had worked as one of the artist for those pieces of work. And he has even been able to gain position within several different gaming companies an industries, as their game titles graphic designer. Which an accomplishment such as this is very telling of his character within the artist community shows that he has put in a lot of work to get where he is and that he is at least very well known with in his community as being a very good artist.
he had first started off providing illustrations for the Pokémon franchises Trading card game, Around about the year of 2011. With having been a year longer fan of the Pokémon franchise at the time and as it remain that throughout the years. And even though he has worked with the Pokémon franchise, his main passion was when he had worked for the mega man, With it being to him, one of his greatest accomplishments within his artist career. Within that career he had to drawn over plenty of different mangas and illustrations for the company within the mid 90s. He’d really fall in love with the community of the MegaMan franchise and had loved to interact with them which shows him as a very kind and sociable individual, More of himself rather than him just being some sort of artist that works for the franchise.
Overall, it is clear that he is very respected and beloved man within his field of work and within the community that he is surrounded by. And that many of his artworks have inspired and interacted with many people. It is very good to know that people like this exist within the world of the artist community since it brings a sense of liveliness and happiness towards this area of career. You know that this man has been able to do something that he really enjoyed and been able to interact with a community he very well enjoyed is it very nice Pleasing to think about when looking at how an artist works within the world of games and companies that revolve around it.

And finally, For the last artist, I’ll be talking about is Atsuko Hishida. She is a Japanese graphic artist, who  i’ve been involved in Several of the early aspects of the Pokémon franchise and has had worked within the Pokémon franchise ever since it’s start. looking a little bit more in into her background, She had been involved in many different pieces of work. For an example, she had worked on The graphics team plusesman, which was one of game freaks very early successes aside from the Pokémon franchise. She had even been able to work with the original Pokémon creators which includes Ken Sugimori, Which of the three people that I haven’t taught about The first one that I’ve been able to find information about them actually working alongside Ken Sugimori. When the first Pokémon game was being created, she was right there alongside the progress helping with many of the designs of the characters and even some of the Pokémon that would later have been put into the games. Noticeably she worked on many of the more cuter designs of the Pokémon which is a very funny and endearing thing to know about since it helps to bring light to what kind of person she is and what kind of artist she was.
A really interesting fact about her is that she was the character designer who was given the role to design the mascot for the Pokémon franchise. Which means that she is one of the main reasons why the Pokémon is known as Pikachu was created. Known the fact that she had specifically worked on the more cuter designs of the Pokémon is very interesting, since That brings more light into that she was one of the at least main creator of the Pikachu design but was also probably the one who were decided that they would be as cute as they are today. It is very interesting to know that this woman is at least one of the reasons why we have the Pokémon known as Pikachu and that probably will without her. We might not have the electrical rat that we all know and love, Who is the mascot for the franchise that everyone across the world loves. It is safe to say that probably without her we could’ve had a very different mascot for our for the Pokémon franchise. And also from going into a little bit more research it is also very well-known that her other favourite Pokémon is that of Eevee and its evolutions. With the main reason being that she had actually helped with the design of Evie and some of the evolutions except for Joltion and Flareon. Knowing that once again she is one of the main reasons why we have what is very well known as Pokémon second mascot is a very interesting and endearing thing to know about this individual. And it also shows that even one artist can have a very big impact on how a very large franchise is known for. Which helps the show that the work of a game artist is just as important as any other within a game franchise.

CONCLUSHION

Finally, in conclusion, I will safely say that I have done at least a decent work for this Research into the artist known as Ken Sugimori. I think that for this research, I believe that I did very well with finding different bits of research to help me properly get down and explore who Ken Sugimori really is. I’d really enjoyed looking up different parts of his life and what he had worked on and he definitely really enjoyed looking at other artists with the same franchise of him, Even with most of them not really having any interaction with him it is still very interesting to know other people who had done similar job roles to him and see their kind of experience within the franchise and how they have in their own way impacted Pokémon franchise and Game Freak.
Some things that I am not very happy with is I feel like I could’ve explained some things better than I did and use better wording within my sentences to help convey what I was trying to say to the audience. I feel like sometimes I may have gone into attention or in one bit of my speaking and gone onto a different topic. Tried my best to make sure that I kept within the realm of what I was talking about, but I feel like maybe I went off attendant in some different bits of this research. I do believe that I could’ve maybe incorporated different resources to gather research from. I feel like I could’ve maybe found some more reliable and Professional research that could have used within my own research to help shed better light on What kind of individual Ken Sugimori really is.
In conclusion, I will be definitely taking into what I have done for this and make sure that I keep it in mind when doing another type of research task for my project. And I’ll also take in mind any easier ways to gather research and find easier ways to explain towards the viewers what I am trying to explain towards them.
